Every year Birmingham Wilderness Medicine runs a course for healthcare students interested in taking their skills and learning how to apply them in the outdoors.

This year our course will take place from 4th to the 6th November 2011 at Hawkshead in the Lake District. The cost will be £75 all inclusive accomodation, food, equipment and course materials, teaching and insurance. Birmingham students pay £5 more and get a years membership of our society (free for non-Birmingham students) and transport to and from the Lake District.

Weather permitting you will be outdoors as much as possible. Here is a taster of what you will do on the weekend.

Outdoor teaching on the hills including:
 - Pre-hospital care of common conditions
 - Casualty stabilisation and extraction
 - Navigation and hillwalking
 - The role of the doctor in an expedition group

Plus teaching in:
 - Expedition and emergency medicine
 - A variety of topics in the world of expedition medicine
 - Talks from medics about their experiences leading expeditions. 

People lined up to teach on the course have been to Antarctica, the Himalayas and Greenland. Many of our tutors have completed the Diploma in Mountain Medicine and will be happy to talk on the weekend about what this involves. 

The course is open to people of all abilities and we will do our best to tailor teaching according to ability. For complete beginners this is a chance to get a taste of hillwalking, navigation and how to apply your medical skills outside hospitals. For more experienced students this is a chance to practice route planning, advanced navigation and group leading.

This course is the highlight of our year of events and if you
